PhD - position in crystallography in Germany

A PhD studentship is offered in the Crystallographic Group, Department of Geosciences, University of Bremen (Germany) for a three years program to work on the crystal chemistry and the structural phase transitions in the system Na2Si2O5 - K2Si2O5

The main aims of the project are as follows :

  1. Characterisation of the structural phase transitions of the sodium- and potassium disilicates as a function of temperature using X-ray single crystal and powder diffraction techniques
  2. Installation of a heating device for the Imaging Plate single crystal diffractometer of the group
  3. Investigations on the existence of possible solid solutions in the Na2Si2O5 - K2Si2O5 system
  4. Investigation of possible high pressure phases (co-operation with the Bayerisches Geoinstitut (Bayreuth) and the Technical University Berlin)

Applicants should have a degree equivalent to an university diploma or MS, experience in crystallography as well as experimental skills. We presuppose a solid background of German or English language.  The position is available from 01 October 2000. Salary will be about DM 1900, which is more than sufficient for living expenses.
