Scope of the Conference
The conference is intended for all those interested in the grain
size, strain and texture of solid state materials as revealed by
X-ray powder diffraction analysis. It is hoped that a collection of
contributions to be published after the conference will result in an
authoritative book on powder diffraction.
Another objective is to illuminate the current methodologies and
data interpretation models used by the participants of the round
robin test on crystallite size and microstrain determination
organized jointly by the Commission on Powder Diffraction of the
IUCr and the JCPDS- International Centre for Diffraction Data.
The sessions of the conference will consist of invited and
contributed papers given both orally and as posters. While only
papers related to the X-ray powder diffraction analysis of the real
structure of matter may be selected for oral presentation by
Programme Committee, posters will be accepted from any field of
crystallography.

Trip to the historical Spis Region and to the High Tatras (only for
persons interested)
Information on short oral contributions and posters will be sent to the participants together with the more detailed information on transportation and accomodation in the third circular.
Instructions for Abstracts
Abstracts of all contributions, including invited lectures, together
with a leading overview article will be published in a special issue
of the journal "Materials Structure in Chemistry, Biology, Physics
and Technology" which is published by the Czech and Slovak
Crystallographic Association and will be available at the
conference. They should be one page long and should have the
following structure :
- Title (only capitals and bold typeface)
- Authors names (upper and lower case and bold typeface)
- Addresses of all authors (italic face)
- Text
- References
The abstracts extending
significantly one page may not be published in full length in the
proceedings. Longer contributions can be published separately after
the conference. More information can be found on the address for
correspondence and/or World Wide Web (see below). Although, the
abstracts can be sent by mail it will be greatly appreciated, if the
authors send the text as a computer file. The journal will be typed
in two-column format by LaTeX, which should be preferably used by
the authors. Other text processors ( MS Word, Ami Pro, Word
Perfect) and/or ASCII text will also be accepted. The figures can
also be in one of the common PC formats (PCX, TIF, GEM, etc.). The
final width of the figures will be 8 cm. The references should be
indicated by numbers in brackets and the list of references given
accordingly at the end of contribution.
The abstracts can be sent
in one of the following ways :
- by mail on a diskette together with
- the manuscript
- by E-mail to : kuzel@karlov.mff.cuni.cz
- by ftp to :kuzel@ns.karlov.mff.cuni.cz/pub/xray or
- by ftp to :sun2.fzu.cz/pub/receive/xray
Authors are asked for using
binary form for electronic mail (uuencode for E-mail, binary mode
for ftp), if they don't send only pure ASCII file. The type of
file, e.g. the type and version of word processor should be
indicated. If an abstract is not acknowledged within a week, it is
probable that it was not received. Please, check the E-mail account
from which the abstract was sent. It may be used for questions.
If
the manuscript contains special characters and/or figures, it should
also be sent by mail or fax so that the editors have a chance for
checking the corectness of the electronic form. Two week delay
after the deadline for this mail is allowed. Note, that the address
for mailing abstracts is different from the address of conference
secretariat.

Location of the Conference
Liptovsky Mikulas
Liptovsky Mikulas is situated in Liptovska kotlina (Liptov valley),
surrounded by beauty mountains: Low Tatras, West Tatras, Chocs Hills
and Large Fatra. The town lies in the valley of the upper Vah river
in the heart of the geographical, administrative and ethnographical
centre known as Liptov since the 13th century.
Thanks to good
geographical conditions this town became important centre of
tourism. Liptovsky Mikulas has a rich history connected with the
forming of Slovak independence. There are several museas and
numerous historical buildings in the town.
Practical Information
The temperature in August in the Liptov region vary between 15C to
25C and weather is rather unpredictable. The conference will be
held at the Military Academy campus. Liptovsky Mikulas can be
reached by plane via Poprad, Kosice, Bratislava, Budapest
(Hungary),Vienna (Austria) or Prague (Czech Republic) airports and
from there by train (Poprad 1hr, Kosice 2.5 hrs, Bratislava 3.5 hrs,
Vienna 5 hrs, Prague 8 hrs). Transportation from the railway
station to the campus and between the campus and hotel will be
organized the first day of the conference. Public transportation is
available too (bus no. 5).
Participants will be accommodated in the centre of winter sports and
tourism Jasna which is near to Liptovsky Mikulas. The registration
desk will be opened on August 21st from 8.00 a.m. in the Military
Academy. The exchange office and some travel services (train
tickets, air tickets, reservations) will be available during
registration.
More detailed information on transportation and accomodation will be
sent to the participants in the third circular.

The Organizing Committee of the Size-Strain '95 observe the basic
policy of nondiscrimination and affirms the rights of scientists
throughout the world to adhere or to associate with international
scientific activity without restrictions based on nationality, race,
colour, age, religion, political philosophy, ethnic origin,
citizenship, language, or sex, in accordance with the Statutes of
the International Council of Scientific Unions.
At this meeting no barriers will exist which would prevent the
participation of bona fide scientists.
Trip to the historical Spis Region and to the
High Tatras
Trip will be organized on Saturday August 26, 1995.
Landmarks of the trip:
- The High Tatras,
- magnificent scenery of the smallest mountain range
of alpine character in the world; the 26 km wide mountain chain of
the glacial origin.
- Levoca,
- the historical town known as early as
in the middle of the 13th century; the Gothic St James Church of the
14th century known especially for the altar by Master Paul of
LevoŸa, several museas, citizen houses in the square valuable from
the art-historical point of view.
- The Castle Spissky Hrad,
- the
largest ruins in Slovakia, situated on a limestone tuff hill,
imposing dominant point towering more than 200 m above the
surrounding area. Originally a Romanesque castle of the 12th
century, rebuilt several times, in the 15th century in Gothic, later
in Renaissance style.
- Markusovce
- the Renaissance manor-house built
in the 17th century, redesigned in rococo style, the museum of
furniture. Inseparable part - the former French park with the
rococo summer house Dardanely, at present the exhibition of
historical keyboard musical instruments of Slovak origin.
Price of the trip (including lunch) - 25 USD - is to be paid at the
conference. Please, indicate your interest in the registration
form.
Programme for accompanying persons :
Accompanying persons can take part in evening social programme and
afternoon excursion. A special trip to the High Tatras (ætrbsk‚
Pleso, Stary Smokovec, Tatranska Lomnica) with a guide can be
organized, if the number of participants exceeds 30 persons.
