We have been interested in the structures of antimony(III) haloanions, both those which are purely inorganic [1] and those containing phenyl groups [2]. The work reported here represents an extension to systems containing both bromine and chlorine. Our interests lie in determining the degree of polymerisation which occurs and in which halide occupies the bridging positions.

A structure determination showed that the title compound contains the tetrameric [Sb4Br12Cl8]8- anion (see Figure), with the antimony(III) centres bridged by bromides. The majority of the remaining halides are affected by disorder and the modelling of this will be described.
