Keywords: non-bonded intramolecular S···S interactions

Most existing studies of non-covalent interactions at sulfur have concentrated on the divalent Y-S-Z case. Among them, sulfur - nucleophile interactions have been well recognized, in particular for the case of S···O short intramolecular nonbonded contacts [1].

We have recently found in ortho-substituted 3,4'-diquinolinyl sulfides, besides S···O interactions, also short intramolecular 1,4 - non-bonded S···S contacts, much shorter than the van der Waals radii sum of 3.6 [2].

Their geometry is eclipsed and similar to 1,4 - S···O non-bonded contacts. Molecular conformation of 3,4'-diquinolinyl sulfides is controlled by these two effects in a similar way as the crystal packing of divalent sulfur compounds described by T.N. Guru Row and R. Parthasarathy [3].

The short 1,4 and 1,5 non-bonded intramolecular short contacts S···S have been also studied using crystallographic data retrieved from the Cambridge Structural Database and an overview in this area will be given .
